OT: Old Model Contests

Recently, I was looking through some old comic sfrom the 60-70's and came across an old Revell contest where you could win a life size Gemini capsule. Anyone remember these old contests and anyone know someone who won this or heard of it? Just thought it was interesting.

Wow! I'm just old enough to not remember that, being only of 32. But, I am willing to bet money that the Gemini was one of the static "boiler plate" test capsuls used for sim and hardware integreateion. There was a small writeup in Air and Space about these couple years back. A mineral/ junk/ whatever shop on the access road just outside Linda, CA on the way to Beale AFB had one in the parking lot/ bike rack.

I used to collect old comics, plus my older brother left me a boat load from the

60s(I'm 35).I remember that ad,and looked it up online a few years ago.It was a test article, and the boy that won it(I believe he was 12)was allowed to sit in it once then had to "donate" it to someplace...some sort of display or play ground I think. I still love reading those old ads...Aurora famous fighters for 98 cents or whatever...wish I had a wayback machine...

Another boiler plate "capsule" serves as a planter box at a weaving center for the handicapped in San Rafael, California.

If you are in the area let me know and I'll give you directions.

Either is, or knows one of the people that won a Mercury capsule that was the prize in one of those contests.

Again, I don't know if this was a joke or it really happened.

When I was a kid in the early 60's, I entered a Revell contest in which the grand prize was an F-86 Sabre (to be donated to your local park or museum). I didn't get the Sabre, but I did win a set of Lancaster and B-17 kits. They later had a contest where the grand prize was a Cessna 150 and flying lessons.

Here in Columbus OH, we have a science and technology musuem...There are two capsules (not sure if they are exactly what you are talking about) that are cardboard /thin metal mockups. They've got a dummy in one and the other one is a mockup that the kids can get in.
