RAF B-25 Mitchells

I have a Doolittle B25 (AM kit) in 1/48th. I would really like to make an RAF Mitchell in 1/48th. Can anyone recommend a model and some decals as I can't find anything (probably because I am not sure what I shlu8ld be looking for - grin).

Thanks in advance.

The Doolittle B-25 was a 'B' model. I think the earliest Mitchells in the RAF had to be the 'C' models. There are differences in the way the engines are exhausted. Sorry I can't help with the decals. I'm not well-versed in 1/48th stuff.

Thanks. Sorry I didn't make it clear that I was aware of the difference in versions. I am looking for a kit and decals.

The British accepteed 25 B-25B as Mitchell I, but they were only used for tests and with an OTU in the Bahamas. There were 579 Mitchell IIs (B-25C & D) used mainly by No. 2 Group of the RAF, which I think was UK-based. Mitchell IIIs were B-25J, but that sounds like it isn't within the scope of what you want to build. The differences between a B-25B and a B-25C are small externally, involving a fixed nose gun, an astrodome and a tail bumper, so a kit that builds either version ought to be convertible to the other with little trouble. As for decals, you should check aftermarket sources, but if you can get good photos of RAF Mitchell IIs, you may find it's possible to get decals together from generic sets with fin flashes, roundels, codes and serials.

Dutch Decals has a set for the B-25C in RAF service with one of the Dutch expatriate squadrons- options include invasion stripes.

Mark:

I believe I have seen some decals for British Mitchels, or at least Dutch Squadrons in the R.A.F. during World War Two by an outfit called "Dutch Decals". I believe Hannant's or Aero-Club carry them. This might give Mr. Pennington the markings he needs.

Thanks to you all. I have recently returned to modelling after many years away so am catching up with what's what. Hannants Lowestoft is

30 miles down the road from me so browsing their huge stock is not too much of a problem. Unfortunatrely, i always come out having spent £150

- still as long as 'her indoors' doesn't mind - grin.

Sounds like a humourous story I once read about a man afflicted with model railroader's disease. He kept hanging around the shop, begging for just one more train fix. :)

Thanks, now all I have to do is find a matching 1/48th kit. I am not up on specific marques and I notice that the decals have a glass nose and the AM 25D has a solid nose. So onward and upward as they say:-) David Pennington snipped-for-privacy@bbbweb.com

They let you in and you can rummage through their whole stock. They have an area of maybe 70 feet of four up shelving just of decals and etched stuff, plus shelves of verlinden out the back. Their book shelving must be 80 feet long with upto 5 shelves high.

I have been there twice now and have spent £150 ($270) and £220 ($400) so maybe your partner is glad you don't live so close - grin. David Pennington snipped-for-privacy@bbbweb.com

? the AM 25D has a solid nose ? My AM B25C/D has glass nose that either stays glass or gets painted over. Mine is the original kit, not a re-issue.

Are you sure you're not thinking of the B-25 G kit (or the AM "G" conversion set for the C/D) that had the 75mm cannon and 50 cal MGs in a solid nose?

Sorry - didn't know about the painted over nose - I was going by the shot on their web site. Looks like I will be trading my B for a C/D. If I keep losing money on my Mitchells, SWMBO will start asking questions :-) David Pennington snipped-for-privacy@bbbweb.com

David,

The RAF did operate B-25Bs, as the Mitchell I, though only a few made it to the UK, the rest were used in the West Indies or States for training.

They were painted in Dark Earth/Dark Green and Sky and had 'standard' markings (at least one had a 'P' mark)

email me at snipped-for-privacy@dial.pipex.com and I can send you some scans.
