Considering how eBay works, unless one party (usually two buyers) is dishonest or stupid, the sale price is pretty much by definition market value. Occasionally a Merlin TSR.2 kit comes up for auction. I've been told this kit is a piece of crap by a number of posters here. I usually bid a hefty amount, and always get outbid. Does that necessarily mean that "a lot" of kits are 'overpriced' on eBay?

eBay is a fantastic way to determine the value of an item. If you though it was worth $50 but the bids consistenty come in at $30, well then it is worth $30.

My experience is that I usually think something is worth $30 and it consistently sells for $50.

This works for items you have many of. The one time item will generally go for more than you thought it would.

Yet a search of completed auctions will often show some auctions of the same items closed with no bids with a minimum below what the others sold for.

Ebay is a strange market. I do notice some stuff that is hard-to-find or truly OOP can go for some serious dollars. This is expected.

These kits are still in the minority but in terms of absolute numbers, it seems to me to be a growing trend. I can think of a couple of reasons including greed, inflated model 'price guides' for 'collectors', and sheer ignorance of the market. Maybe too many morons responding to spam emails telling you how to make a fortune on ebay ...

The only problem that I have with eBay is some of the people I encounter there. You know them, the ones with deeper pockets than mine. 8-( Three Pyro Roman merchant ships, three outbids! All in one month!
