Russian Tank Green

Can any of you treadheads out there help me with a painting problem ???

I have a few Soviet/Russian vehicles in 1:72 scale that I want to complete - a Scud-B & TEL, two different S-300 TELs plus BMP's, BTR's etc.

The Scud is to go with my An-22 model - the rest are just of interest - (you buy one, you like it, it leads to more. Before you know where you are you are on the downwards slope to treadheadism).

The trouble is - all the kit instructions call for Humbrol Hu 114 as the best match for a modern-ish Russian Tank Green.

Humbrol Hu 114 has been unavailable for some time now - anyone know of a good equivalent match??

Enamels are preferred - as are those most easily available in the UK - but any offers gratefully received.

Standard one most Russians have indicated is close is FS34102, which is a good color as it is one of the USAF Vietnam shades and easy to find.

Thanks Cookie,

I may just have an old unopened tin from Humbrol's USAF Vietnam Camouflage set somewhere....

What is the Model Master Soviet Armour Green a match for then, WWII?

I think it's close or it is the same shade in a different jar. Did they give it an FS number?

No, FS34102 is supposed to match the WW2 shade of Soviet OD. The Model Master color is supposed to be a postwar shade, apparently, but it doesn't seem to match anything, being very blue and glossy. I suspect it was matched to a photo rather than an actual paint chip, and the color looks off to me. Russian armor maven Steve Zaloga suggested FS34098 for the very dark green used on Cold War-era Soviet tanks. Gerald Owens

But what they had the most of would not have come from the local hardware store.

It would have come through the system and be in the paint store - and would have been supplied from the 'Russian Tank Green' zavod (factory'.

So, while I might agree that they may have been slipshod in their choice of what was available, what was available would be a fairly limited choice, I suspect.

I'm not talking here of a field deployment either - when patching up would probably have made use of local materials, I'm talking about at home, in barracks.

Just my two penn'orth

Actually since before WWII most tanks came from the factory painted a specific color of green. Prior to WWI and during it the color was called 4BO and field repairs and repaints were done using semi-dry pigment mixed with gasoline or whatever they had. Result was, um, interesting.

Postwar the color was changed slightly (as Gerald noted) and was dubbed "Khaki No. 2" but as Steve Zaloga said was closer to a dark green, and FS 34098 is about right.

But again, quality control varied a lot, and as a result it could fade out to anything from black to chartreuse depending upon mix, factory, and unit applying it.

I think they are using prepared enamels now and as a result colors are far more stable.

Nice to see it has an FS number (what colour doesn't?!) but which Humbrol/Tamiya/Xtracolor number is the closest match these days?

According to my handy Scale Colour Reference chart (wot I got from the Internet some time ago) - FS 34098 is matched by Humbrol 150 - or HJ 3 in their WWII colours range (IIRC). There are no other manufacturer colours listed.

The colour chart lists FS 34098 as 'Brownish Green' - and Hu 150 is certainly that.

I just gave my white metal BMP-1 a quick coat of Hu-150 - and it looks a bit bright - and brownish to my unprofessional eye.

I will persevere however - the model is only being used as 'noseweight' inside my An-22, but I also want to complete my Scud-B TEL in the same colour scheme........
