Tamiya 109/Zero rather unimpressive

I was digging through the stash in storage and came across the Tamiya 1/48 Zero and 109E-4/7. Hadn't opened the boxes yet, so I thought I'd take a look. I wasn't terribly inpressed with either in regard to amount of parts or detail. Were these a couple of their lesser kits, or am I missing something? I realize both a/c were a bit spartan, but.....Now it becomes a sore point to think I paid extra for Tamiya. I also have their 1/72 Corsair that is most impressive in both detail and parts count. What happened in the larger scale?

I can't vouch for the Bf 109 or Zero, but I have to say I find Tamiya's stuff pretty mundane as a whole; I started the 1/48 Mosquito but gave up as it was no fun; same also with the Typhoon. Maybe it's the lack of challenge? Anyone else experienced this? By comparison, I found the Accurate Minatures A-36 and Sturmovik really enjoyable to build.

Just my ten pen'orth.

The Zero kit is 20 years old. It doesn't have anywhere near the detail of any of their recent kits.

I gave up my 1/48 Tamiya Zero for the Hasegawa one - the Type 21. Very nice, and the Verlinden update for it makes it most impressive.

Very true, personally I don't see what the problem is with the Bf-109E. Have you compared it to the Hasegawa? Cheers,

Actually, no, I was doing a quick visual against R/M, and I really don't see any extra piecesparts, details or general ummph that warrant basically triple the price.
