we used condoms on the early M-16s when you would let off a burst the 'rubber' would swell and blow away. some even would float for a couple of seconds.silly sh*t that still hangs around in my memory. Mike IPMS

There's a story (I can't vouch for the authenticity) that a request was made for condoms to be specially made for larger calibre weapons, I can't recall the specified dimensions, but the inference was they would have been a loose fit on a donkey. The manufacturers said there would be no technical problems in producing such an item, but were reluctant to proceed with ordering formers until they had a contract. The paperwork kept getting passed up the chain as nobody was really willing to put their name on it, until word of it reached Churchill, who demanded to see it. He then signed for it himself, adding the provisos the items must be clearly marked "Made in England" and "Medium size"...

Cheers,

Urban legend, I think you'll find. But I am willing to stand corrected.

The version I had was Stalin requested some of those fine American rubbers from FDR. He responded with a batch of the "donkey covers" that were stamped "Texas medium."

I guess we'll never know the truth...
