The Testors 1:48 U-2A is a bit toy-like - the wheel well doors are moulded to the fuselage, cockpit is just a seat glued to the bottom of the fuselage, etc - and requires cutting edge's resin wheel wells and cockpit to make it anything like accurate.
The Italeri 1:48 U-2R is ok, but has raised panel lines and the wheel wells are pretty inaccurate - not suprising, given how classified they were when the model was released!

Italeri and Testors are not the same ?
thanks
Yes and No. Testors released three boxings: the U-2C, the U-2R, and the TR-1A. The U-2C is a modification of the old Hawk U-2A mold. Considering it's age, it is actually a nice kit and relatively accurate. The U-2R and TR-1A are basically the same kit and is a completely different mold from the U-2C kit. Basically, the only difference in the Testors boxings of the U-2R and the TR-1 is that the U-2R kit has the flat cases on the front sides of the superpods.
I don't believe Italeri ever reboxed the U-2C kit. They did however, rebox the U-2R and TR-1A kits. In addition, Italeri added an additional sprue to the U-2R kit with antennas and extras to make the U-2R Senior Span kit. The Senior Span kit never appeared in a Testors box.
Basically, if you want an early "short wing" U-2, get the Testors U-2C. For a U-2R/S with all the antenna farms and dorsal satellite antenna, get the Italeri U-2R Senior Span kit. Only the plain-Jane U-2R/TR-1A is available in both boxings.
