VX-9 Super Hornet color?

Just got the Revell F/A-18E at Brookhurst along with the new Superscale sheet for the single seater. The decal instructions call for VERY dark blue for the tail in one place, and black in another view. Anybody know what the real color is??? Looked on Google images for a pic and couldn't find anything other than standard gray line birds.

It's blue.

BTW - here's a pic:

which does make it look as if the tails are black on the outsides, and blue on the insides. I could swear that the last time I saw this jet (like a few weeks ago...) they were blue on both sides. But that was now, these pics are then. I'll take another look...

(Damn...now I gotta buy one of these...)

Hi Jim,

This question came up on ARC a week or so back, the consensus from those who know about these things is that the tails are very dark blue, almost black.

In fact the suggestion for mixing the colour was, start with black paint and add blue until you can just see the blue tint.

That's about correct. I just spent the morning out on the line, and took a walk around this jet for myself to get the straight dope...here's what Vampire 100 looks like as of about 1100 PDT today:

1) the tails are VERY dark blue, both on the inside and outside. If they look darker on the outsides, it is a trick of the shadows. 2) the tails are/were glossy, but dulled to a semi-gloss by the high desert sun. 3) the Playboy bunny has been removed from the insides of the tails.

4) this jet has not been through Phase II mod, and so the ECS heat exchanger exhausts between the tails are correct as provided in the kit, based on the pictures of the kit I have seen...and providing this is the same jet.

Gonna get hot today...

Thanks, all- there are pix on Airliners.net that would lead you to believe the tails are black outside and blue inside. The Superscale instructions also don't mention the yellow tip and leading edge!!!

I personally would paint the outside surfaces black...and the inside surfaces a dark blue (perhaps with a "panel-fading" technique, and perhaps also a bit more matte). This will "replicate" what you have seen on the genuine article, as influenced by the sun.

What color are the branch modexes on the sides of the aft end? At one time, it had "NAVY" on one side in blue shadowed in yellow, and "MARINES" on the other side in crimson shadowed in yellow. Now, it's "NAVY" in grey on both sides...

If the decals show the former, match the yellow in those...or on any of the decals.

If I had to guess at the blues, I'd call them 15048 on the insides, and

15044 on the outsides, looking at my 595b fan deck.

It's actually not black...sort of in the way that Navy blue isn't "black". I'd think that if you scaled it down, it would get more so.

The bat in the center of the tail IS black...you can see the contrast, if you look close.
