While the city burns...

Oct 28, 2003 10 Replies

Had the day off because...well...damn near the entire county is on fire! Air quality is so bad that they're telling us to stay indoors unless it's absolutely necessary to go out. They don't want us driving around either, because emergency vehicles are going back and forth.

So I decide to make more progress on the Xmas gift I'm building for my brother, the Heller Eiffel Tower model I was bitching about before. This kit has some fit problems, but overall it went together pretty well. I'm just a few parts away from completion! Tomorrow, I'll look at where it didn't fit that well and probably put in some sheet plastic shims for reinforcement.

Due to lack of motivation, time and/or energy , I haven't seriously built a kit for a while but I think I've just rediscovered how diverting and relaxing the hobby is. I mean, I REALLY had a good time doing this.

After spraying a coat of dark primer, I think I'll drybrush the thing with a metallic brown paint I got from Model Expo. Never having seen the actual tower, I know this probably isn't accurate but HEY! I'm using artistic license to create my own "interpretation" of the real thing!

...now if only I can extend this momentum for another few days so I can tackle some of the half-finished kits in the closet!

Hi Woody (and all you r.m.s.'ers),

I'm in the San Diego area. The sky is starting to resume a somewhat normal color today, so that's encouraging.

Still got the day off too. Woo Hoo! More time to do modeling!

Mike

Smoke...fire...paint fumes...

Just keep one step ahead of the burn - I've got a cousin down San Diego way the I can't get in touch with...starting to worry.

e - from what I just heard on the lunchtime news, the fires are moving toward the Cajone. Keep and eye on things and stay prepared.

i am, i packed my hawiian shirt and my ukele. i don't think there's enough veg here to support a fire.

hopefully he was smart and evac'd when told to.

The fires are far from under control, but I live in an older suburb in the middle of the city, so apart from the smoke and ash, I feel pretty safe. Still, yesterday I loaded up my truck with the essentials should a quick getaway be necessary.

The sky is starting to clear up a little, so that's encouraging.

BTW, I finished basic construction on that Eiffel Tower model last night. First kit completed in a LONG time!!

Mike

Just got word that they did - fire stopped and turned below them and they got to go back today. Smoke damage only.
