I have also found that the email harvesters are becomming "smarter." They can automatically strip out the more common '_delete_me_' or '_SPAM_' phrases and still get to your real email.

I think the gripe is with Google. I got the onslaught of virus emails this weekend too.

I signed up for this forum late last week. This is my first message, I have not posted until now. With that said, how would someone get my email if I haven't posted?

How do I change my email address? Google sends a verification email to the address you change it too, so if it is bogus how do I reply to verify the address?

Nope. THIS virus/worm searches newsgroups on the newsservers. It has an internal list of which servers to search (IIRC over 100).

Google is not a news server.

Get a new account. Or ask their support folks via Email. Responses, if you get one, can take days.

You CAN get a dummy account at yahoo.com or many other places to get the return Email from Google to confirm the new account. Google's help section also has a small section.

Warning: you may be using cookies which would need to be deleted (?) or it would just autologin you to your old account anyway.

As this worm reads the names on the posts on the news servers directly killing your old posts should do the trick . You cannot do that from Google unless you posted from there.

I'd guess the latency on the servers is about two weeks so don't worry about older posts (too much). 30 days max I suspect.

Well, I've had the same e-mail addy for 8 years now. I get 6 pieces of spam a week and that is the most. This holds true for my work, home and home business accounts. My hotmail account is flooded of course and that is what I have it for. I have a Yahoo account as well. Both of these use a different user name, so I have a better idea of where the spam originates.

For you clever ones who think that adding "nospam" and such to your address foils spam, how's it working out for you? Not so well I would guess. How many of you actually put your e-mail address on questionaires? How many are ignorant enough to actually use a 'unsubscribe' link? How many actually use their address in the usenet? How about listing your e-mail on web sites? There are secure ways of doing the last, but huge lists are compiled by simply snarfing e-mail addresses from html.

I'll take a keen sense of the obvious over genius any day.

OUCH! Actually, there were about four good tips for avoiding spam in that post. Sorry for the delivery, I'm kind of a geek and lack social grace when people have shot themselves in the foot and are blaming the gun.

I Hate Spam is what I put on my daughters computer. It runs from Outlook and also handles webmail. AV programs may have some spam filtering, but are typically not as robust as dedicated spam filters.
