Recommend Laptop for SW? value for money?

I'm looking at two/ three:

HP DV6217: Intel Dual core T2060 Memory 1 GB (160 GB HDD) NVIDIA Geforce GP 7400 128 dedicated memory etc......

Acer Travelmate 6463 WLMI Intel centrino Duo T5500 2 MB cache Memory 2048 MB (120 GB HDD) Ati Mobility radeon X1300 128/ 256 MB Hypermemory etc...

Fujitsui Siemens Amilo Pro V3505 Intel core duo T5500 Intel chipset 945GM Memory 1 GB (120 HDD) Intel GMA 950 256 Graphics core with dynamic memory up to 128 MB

General: 15,4" screen, I also wish to have the possibility to hook up an extra screen for parts/ details etc... I'm pretty blank at this, here in Norway prices are pretty squeezed, but I don't have too much money to put into this. Will also wish to run Cosmos works.... but a coffe break is acceptable from time to time... Also; I'm fairly blank at this issue at this time but I do not find any laptops with graphics cards accepted/ tested by SW.

Thanks in advance. Knut

Check out Toshiba models... they have nVidia cards in them. A few solidworks users here have them and they seem fine. Be careful though they pre-configure a lot of systems. I prefer to "customize" when I hit their website. Lso the Intel website has a table of specs for the T2060, T5550 etc... it is very useful when comparing systems.

There have been a lot of Posts in this newsgroup over the last year if you search the word "laptop" and you will see a lot of concepts and recommendations.

My personal bitch is that buying low can sometimes get you things that either don't work or have too many glitches.

I have stuck with the highest end Dell, now the M65 or M90, and I have never gone wrong. You can sometimes buy a refurb M70, M65 or M90 and save a bit, but you will wind up being able to use these machines for an absolute minimum of 3 years (buy the 3 year on site warranty fix- replace Complete Care package).

Picking to save money upfront can sometimes cost you downstream.

value aside,

if h/p is a real choice, take a look at this model,

comes with xp pro & fx1500. even though it's a bit dated. it works well with CAD.

The advises I have gotten is that the M90 aint as stable as the M65 and M70 was, which where the laptops I had earlier.

That has not been my experience. I had an M70 for 3 years with no problems. I now have an M90 ( 4 months) with absolutely no problems as well. On the M90 I am running Windows XP x64 Edition ( 4 gig ram).

Put in a new hard drive (they are cheap), reload XP & SolidWorks and then you will be able to compare apples to apples.
