I'm trying to use a 8k x 6k pixel jpeg for a sketch picture and while solidworks will show me the preview when I highlight it it gives me the error "could not be opened or is an incompatible format" if I try to select it. It's just your basic JPEG (yes I know there are lots of subtypes but it's just a generic 24-bit jpeg).
Sketch picture limitations?

Download and install the GIMP and convert it to something SW likes like a TIFF. JPEG seems to have grown some variants over the years. 8K x 6K seems a bit large for tracing over. You might want to shrink it too by either removing color or the format.

Shrunk it with Photoshop to 4k x 3k and it worked fine. Need the high res because there are lots of crossections on the drawing and I didn't want to lose detail.
