I have created an assembly, I used insert component to insert a few sub assemblies into the document. In the feature manager design tree each assembly does have an assembly icon. Seems fine so far. When the file is imported into another app, the subs are not listed as separate assemblies, but a list of the parts. Is there anything I need to do to distinguish these subs for use with other apps?

the files are being brought into Acrobat 3D for demonstration purposes. Catia files seem to bring in the sub assemblies fine, SW files are coming in as parts rather than subs.(all are imported in their native formats.)

Ok, so Acrobat 3D is doing this. It really has nothing to do with how you created the subassemblies. If it's an assembly doc, it's an assembly as far as SW is concerned.
