Threads

Can I model threads with SW that I can actually mate and have function properly? I so far have not been successful with Inventor. The visual representation looks good as does the one done with AutoCad. I am not to the point yet with my sketching to do this with SW.

Yes,

It's called (don't snicker) a Screw Mate. It doesn't actually mate the threaded surfaces that you've created but at time of creation of the mate, you enter the pitch etc.

Yes, it can be done, but most people don't do it. You can model the threads in the two mating parts using the helix command, but these features will be real resource hogs, quite possibly bringing your system to its knees or worse. You are much better off to use cosmetic threads for your drawings and the Screw Mate that Mark mentioned for your assemblies.

I agree with Jerry that threads for simple fasteners are a total waste of resources. There is one example of when I feel that threads need to be modeled exactly. (this may be behind what Paul was getting at when he asked what the application was.) I design plastic injection molds. Sometimes the molded part is going to have threads on that will need to be molded. In this case it is nice to have the thread modeled on there. That way the exact geometry can be incorporated into the 3-d data for the tool design.

Normally speaking, yeah, threads are pointless to model. However, I can see why this functionality should be included anyway, given the example above, and perhaps if someone what's an animation of threads engaging.

I have used both threads and helical cam surfaces to control positioning in devices and made threads that I want to mate, and would have liked to have better control over them. I suppose the new "Screw Mate" is likely in SWks 2008. Is that right?

From what I can discern from the posts and the help file the actual threads do not have to be modeled to use the mate. I have still not figured out how to set it up yet. It is called a screw joint.
