OK, let me sum up my response to everyone's responses.

To the poster who said I should have just mailed Ebay, you're right.

What had happened was that I had been perusing the structures section of ebay to find some examples of differing quality levels to display for a beginners model RR class I'm teaching in Jan.

While there were some bargains in the higher priced "craftsman" kits (Campbell kits in particular), the great majority of lower-priced "shake the box" kits were overpriced. This was beginning to irritate me, but at least they weren't all claiming their item was worth much more than it was. When I saw the one that made that claim, I reacted strongly.

Perhaps it is the fact that the people most taken in by these overpriced items are the beginners, some of whom aren't even adults yet. Here I'm trying to get people into the hobby (and into the NMRA) and these so-and- sos are busily trying to cheat them.

To those who say it's none of my business, I can only say that your ethics and mine differ. IMNSHO, if experienced modellers don't protest when we see newcomers being taken advantage of, we're not being ethical.

Steve, presumably you got that response because for many people, wheeling and dealing on Ebay is a hobby in it's own right. And people get testy when you put s*it - however justified it may be - on their hobby.

Myself, I can never understand why folks become so overwrought about what is no more than an electronic flea market.

Oh cut the crap - you still haven't let anyone on rec.models.railroad know what the auction was or who the seler was; you only posted your first message after getting a reply from the eBay seller.

That $12 is the MRSP (Manufacturers SUGGESTED Retail Price). Did you check Walthers.com to see if it is even in stock? Just curious. Just because it is listed in the thick paper catalog DOES NOT mean it is something that is in stock. Like I said, just curious, alot of stuff at Walthers is not in stock. If a guy knows this and then lists it on eBay for even twice what the MSRP is and someone buys it well then it is worth $24 to the person who purchases it isn't it?

Caveat emptor: The axiom or principle in commerce that the buyer alone is responsible for assessing the quality of a purchase before buying. Or put another way, do your homework before you buy.

If the guy is a scammer (i.e. takes money and doesn't send the product or blatantly misrepresents the condition of the item) then he is in the wrong. If the guy has high negatives or very few positives then beware. Simple really.

If I want to list a stock Athearn locomotive for $300 then I have the right to do so. It will sit there forever but if I do sell it well then that's the way it goes. For whatever reason it is worth $300 to the person who buys it. Caveat emptor. Maybe because they're a moron and don't know the market or they didn't do thier homework.

This really is not that difficult a situation to understand guys.

One more time - I didn't get upset because of the high price. I got upset because the seller claimed the high price was a bargain.

And the kit is readily available. I just bought one for $6.00.

If somebody sent me an email complaining about my ebay price, I'd either ignore it or just respond that I think that's what it's worth, and I'll let the market decide.

It would be nice to know who this boob is though. Even if he's a "power seller" and has good feedback, I wouldn't want to do business with someone unable to communicate in complete sentences.
