The big thing to do to Shinohara turnouts is to solder a wire from the points to the frog to reduce the need of the pivot rivet to a mechanical one. These turnouts made me crazy by losing continuity to the point rails until I did this fix per an Allen Keller article in MR about 12 years ago. Helps a bunch.

I still make my own turnouts and use the finescale standards as described on web page, easier than P4 or S 3.5. If you want to buy instead of build, Peco electro frog turnouts are the best of the cheaper brands.
