TIA,
It has been a few years since I dealt with them, but they always had good, prompt service. I never had any problems.

---------------------------------------------------- I've dealt with Trainworld by phone several times and was always pleased with them.

I've bought a number of locos from them and I'm very satisfied with their service and prices. I had a problem with one that I bought and they promptly took care of it. I'll be buying more from them as soon as I can figure out how to get UPS to make deliveries when my wife's not home. :-)

Some folks think they are curt but I think that's just the attitude of a high-volume store. Good prices and good service. Best to know exactly what you want when you call their toll-free order line.

Actually, the curtness is more likely a NYC characteristic. I have bought camera equipment from B&H in NYC and you need to know what you want and have all of your ducks in a row when you call.
Not quite relevant to the original query, but some years ago, whilst on a trip to the States from Australia, a friend and I went to Train World . To us, from the far side of the world, most amazing! A vast amount of stock. Two girls and a fellow, rushing about the place, shouting at the top of their voices, arguing with each other, phones going off all the time. Made our visit to N.Y. worthwhile. and we got what we wanted there, at a fair price. Regards, Bill.
"George" figure out how to get UPS to make deliveries when my wife's not home. :-)
Excellent prices, always accurate when filling the order, prompt delivery to your home vis UPS. Two Big Thumbs Up!
I fully agree w/ other posters who stated the *importance* of "having your ducks in order". The same holds true for the NYC camera stores that we have made telephone orders with over the years. These places offer superb prices and excellent end results. They're simply interested in customer satisfaction regarding the order placed. Check your emotions at the door before entering or calling their business, and you'll leave as a satisfied customer.
Hmm. This puts the curt email exchanges I had with Trainworld in perspective. I have to pick up my order from the post-office when I return from Christmas vacation. Their service was very prompt but their communication left much to be desired.
Cheers,
Colin
Actually, I talked to a very polite lady who knew exactly what I wanted when I could only give a vague description. She was extremely helpful. (Of course, I still have my NJ accent after thirty years sway from there). Didn't their father die recently (August)? And, I believe he was very sick for a number of years. That really puts a strain on a family business.

First, to George, if you figure THAT out, please send me a blind copy.
8-))As to TrainWorld, I too have used them a few times. My contact has been both email and telephone, with one or two return/late delivery "problems" that were efficiently and courteously resolved. For me the big kick was calling and hearing a voice inflection from the past. I grew up in Brooklyn and have worked to soften the overtones in my speech. It was like calling home.
My bottom line, they are good, reliable, and quintessentially New York. ("Quintessetially" ain't no New Yawk woid, lemme tell yah!) Would I buy from them again? If they have what I need, in a New York Minute, you bet yer aahh, well, "Yes, I would."

I'll add a not-at-all New York voice to agree with all you've said. Know what you want, don't waste their time, and it's a rare accident that you'll find a better deal anyplace.
Jeff
Thanks ,all!
The consensus seems to be that they're good people to deal with if you've got your act together, so they'll be getting an order Monday!
I appreciate the responses!

Actually, it depends on which store. If you are talking about Abe's of Maine, CCI, Cambridge, etc., then you can't say enough bad stuff about them to equal what is true. They have a reputation as being some of the slimyist people in the business.
OTOH, I have used B&H a few times and they are very good and honest. Like any high volume store, they may make an occasional mistake, but they try to fix things when they do. Henry Posner used to post on the 35mm equipment group until the trolls ran him (and a number of professional photographers) off. DEATH TO TROLLS!
Adorama also has a good reputation; although, I have never done business with them. But, those are about the only two NYC camera stores that I would buy from. Certainly, I would avoid Abe's, CCI, Cambridge, and the others like I would avoid bubonic plague.
Actually, I am glad for this thread, since I had wondered about doing business with Trainworld because of the reputations of some NYC firms.
Just have the part numbers of what you want from their magazine adds and they will tell you everything else about the what they have related to it. Lots of good prices too. Gordon
