D-Day crank up

It is the anniversary of D-Day today. The Wessex Stationary Engine Club is holding a crank up with a military theme at the Old Down Inn, Emborough, Somerset, BA3 4SA this evening.

We are encouraging exhibitors to bring an engine with a military connection & even to wear appropriate dress should they have anything to hand.

From 7.00pm I'd imagine ...............

No cross dressing here!

I might dig out my Battle of Britain kit if it isn't too hot. Blue shirt, silk scarf, Irvin jacket, flying helmet with earphones, MkVIII goggles, oxygen mask with mic and even a Mae West. Sheepskin flight gloves & front zipped boots available but not today.

The RAF SqLdrs uniform doesn't fit me ATM ...........

In the end I was in civvies - just ran out of time.

I took a US Signals genny from the Korean War. It is a sophisticated little beast & turns itself off when the battery is charged. I took a flat battery & it ran cheerfully all evening.

There were about 20 engines, but the car park was full when I got there just after 7.00pm. Paul Chant's Diesel Blackstone vertical was the hit of the evening & Made Smoke like a destroyer after a U boat!
