I think it is a Lister LT1. It produces 7bhp @ 3,600 RPM. Made from about

1974 onwards.

Oh, by the way, I'm sure it is obvious but there is some cowling missing that effectively channels the air from the fly wheel fan to the cylinder fins.

Not really, it looks like an LT1 at the top but I think they are less than 2 ft high.

You're right, the LT1 is small (the smallest Lister Diesel available in the

70's) and a very impressive power output for it's size but the engine in question is identical to the LT1 so unless they made an identical but even smaller version, then I'm sure it's an LT1.

I'm also pretty sure it's an LT1 looking at the rocker cover, I think it's the only one that looks like that, but I still think they were less than 2 ft, probably nearer to 18"-20".

The size sounds about right for either an LT1 or an LV1 (dunno the exact diference between the 2 - sorry). The only other Flattop listers that spring to mind are the TS/TR series, but they're a good bit bigger and have a spin-on oil filter (on the LHS(?) looking at flywheel IIRC). Got an LT1 on me power washer. Flippin' nice is all I can say about it! Have a look at Listers homepage for more info
