Thanks for the replies, I can confirm it's a harmonic 2 stroke Petter
Last time it was started (about a year ago IIRC) it could be heard halfway across Loughborough! It's still in running condition, has been stored in a nice dry laboratory.
Now we're wondering what to do with it - obviously it's worth a bit, but if it went to a museum then being for educational purposes, some sort of arrangement might well be possible,
BTW. I know the priciple of the inertia of the exhaust gasses being used to draw in the fresh charge - but how is the cycle initiated when you start the engine?
If it is anything like my college work involving tuned intake pipes it is based on the pulse going down the tube and causing a partial vacuum behind it so that when the port/valve opens it drags in the charge with greater force than normal. Intake tubes are designed to cause a shock wave just in front of the pipe which sort of forcr feeds air in to the intake.
As I understand it though the Harmonic does not use crankcase compression or a scavenge blower, so how do you get that first charge into the cylinder to produce the exhaust pressure wave which draws the next one in - sort if chicken and egg situation? But then it is a diesel so all you need is a cylinder full of fresh air - oh, I think I might just have answered my own question!
BTW It's lunch time at the moment so don't have a go about be being a lazy !"£$% Martin ;-)
Silly me forgot to mention that it would start like any normal engine just be more efficient when running. And I am not being lazy, ive now got to cycle four miles back to garage to pick up repaired van.

If it is a rarey, we don't want it to go the same way as the Clayton and Shuttleworth do we. For some reason we don't have the same controls over exporting our engineering heritage as some other countries.
For those with short memories, a selection of Mr Green's postings on the newsgroup, all available on Google in case he claims that these are made up:
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ "For your information Mr P T E my Engines are not over priced I sell far to many for that to be the case, however they probably are to expensive for you! but I do have a nice 5HP M type petter for £300 which I guess you could stretch to! so do try and not be such an arse hole in the future! Steve Green."
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Do I know you? NO I don't so mind your own business and go and buy a rusty petter to do up !!!!. STEVE GREEN.

A really unpleasant character who most of use here wouldn't touch with a very long bargepole, and that goes for his associates too.

And why is that Mr Forbes considering that I have never met you, never talked to you, and never sold you any thing and yet you feel that you want to put me down. so come on tell the group what your problem is with me?. I have supplied thousands of engines to customers all over the world including the anson museum and internal fire and I have never had one complaint so Mr Forbes SPEAK UP and tell us all what you have to say and why you seem to think I am so bad ?????.
No wonder we don't get any new members to this group I was only trying to help this guy by giving him a value which he was asking for and I get all this S**t yes I am a dealer but I also am a collector of engines and have been for 28 years and one of my favourite engine makers happens to be petter of which I own 4 from a 5hp M to a 62.5bhp Vickers petter (see Paul Evans web site) ok I made a few nasty comments but with good reason sorry about that. now can we get on with the task in hand ?
Apologies for not replying earlier, we are a bit busy at work and I haven't been able to get online during the day.
You are your own worst enemy. Many people here would have been happy to deal with you, including myself at one time, but various incidents and your recent outburst on the newsgroup have just really shown you in what we must assume are your true colours.
Whatever your claims to be this and that, we have to go by what we see and hear, not by your own version, and as long as the two remain incompatible then your position will remain somewhat enigmatic.
It is pointless extending the hand of friendship only to see it being snapped at each time.
Apologies again for not being able to respond sooner.

Having never met you or had any dealings with you any remarks I make here are not personal.
This HOBBY is populated with the friendliest bunch of people that I have ever had the opportunity to meet. This applies to all contributors and readers of this newsgroup.
However, from my meeting members of the hobby through clubs, the Internet and the rally field, I have found that the biggest single grouse that people have is the few that have turned a HOBBY into a business. This has the effect of forcing up prices unnaturally. Newcomers to the engine scene are put off by the rising prices.
The preferred method of acquisition or disposal is by swap, friendly sale or barter.
If you want to continue trading then it would be better if you contributed to the newsgroup on a regular basis rather than appearing to just appear as if by magic when there is a sniff of business and on those occasions keep the vitriolic comments to yourself.
It may be worth you reading the newsgroup charter where you will find that 'trading' on the newsgroup whilst not being directly mentioned is not encouraged.
