Have just got the motor pulley changed on the Tandberg tape deck I brought back from the USA in August. It needed changing as the capstan motor is synchronous and runs at a speed dependent on the mains frequency.
Anyway, after a bit of reassembly I got the beastie running and dug out a load of old tapes. The difference compared with the old (worn out) Philips decks was really noticeable, mainly the clarity of the original recordings which were made in the 1960's and 70's (showing my age again!)
Singin' the Blues, A White Sport Coat, Yellow Rose of Texas and such oldies still delight as much as they did then, and thank heavens I kept the tapes!
No2 son has also got the bug now, his Pioneer deck landed at Tim's doorstep in Cupertino, California a couple of hours ago by UPS, so that will be coming back with us in April...
I still enjoy a lot of 80's music, especially some of the better groups, but there is a certain magic about the 1950's and 60's that probably relates to the fact that I was in the start of my early teens and it was all happening in a way that seems almost naive these days.
