Stirling Engine

I have been given a laboratory stirling engine made by G Cussons of Manchester. It is a marked P5688/2 and looks much the same as current P5691 but without power supply. See:-

steadily with about 40 volts on the heating element.

I'm in two minds as to whether I want to hang on to it or not, so may consider a swap if anyone else desperately wants to own one of these and has 'something interesting' to offer in exchange.

Couple of pics on webshots - end of 'all hot air' album.

I don't know when they started making them but the P5691 is still available today.

It is running in the pics (one with flash and one without) seems to settle at around 500rpm.

When was it made? I was at school in the 60s and don't recall our physics dept having any toys like this. I'd quite like to see it running some time.

Sorry, my misunderstanding. Not much to see really, just sits there and rattles gently to itself!

I had assumed it was a post war relic! I could see that is running from the pictures, not quite the same as real life.

Never ceases to amaze me how quickly things can move sometimes as a result of this NG. Several people showed interest in the Cussons engine - first off the mark being our Kim, A little bit of haggling over what constituted 'something interesting' and a deal was done for a Stuart-Turner N in what might on ebay be described as 'stripped for inspection' condition.

Now one usually suspects that this actually translates as; taken apart and found to be knackered beyond belief then left under the bench until half the bits have been either lost or 'borrowed'! So there are not many people I would trust in this respect, but Kim is one of them (besides, I know where he lives!) and we did a motorway service station exchange this afternoon. A couple of hours later I had the engine loose assembled with one 1/4" BSF nut left over and only the flywheel key AWOL, don't you just love 3D jigsaw puzzles with no picture on the box.

Anyway, It's a marine version and the water pump drive gear is stripped (Kim had already told me this) so options are to try and find a gear or to de-marinise. So if anyone has any Stuart N parts which would help in either direction please let me know.

Too right, you won't be seeing that nut again in a hurry ;-) (careful to add smiley this time lest my meaning be misunderstood by others - this can be a very tricky medium you know!)

Serindipitious, one might call it. I'm actually reading my way through the new postings when Nick pops up with the Cussons hot air engine to swap. It is just like it says on the tin, lots of heat and very little power, but an engaging little device & my first Stirling cycle engine.

So I arrive in Essex with yet another New Toy in the back of the car. Like minded persons gathered round to discover if it would run off a car battery - and the answer is nope!

So home today, I gang three car batteries together and after a bit of pre heating, away it goes.

I do like swapping deals - everyone happy & new things to play with all the way round. I wonder if I'm going to have to find the key before Nick will give me my nut back ;o))

Regards,

Kim Siddorn,
