I am sure that I have seen around on my travels an 00 gauge overhead crane used for lifting off of and on to trains the 20 / 30ft containers which sit on flat trailers. Can anyone possibly tell me if I am just imagining it, or whether such model exists. What I am thinking I have seen is the crane that is featured i nthe background of the picture at

Indeed it was, first introduced into the range in about 1966 IIRC, a great toy with plenty of 'play appeal' but a horrid model - although at least on brave sole managed to motorise one, there was a full write up of how he did it in a early '70's RM!...
As it is a VERY industrial machine, even an HO version from the States would suffice - I recall seeing images of the best dock crane ever built a few months back - completely functional and DCC equipped. If they've got stuff like that over there, I reckon you'll be able to find what you're looking for.
I bought (still to build....slack I know) a stunning crane carriage setup from Tichy - maybe have a look at them, or similar.

A year or two back Roco announced plans to release a DCC controlled gantry crane in HO scale but I understand that this has now been dropped. The DCC controlled breakdown crane was released and may still be available.

Whilst not motorised (though it may be possible to do so), I believe Brawa, Herpa and Kibri produce models of the sort of container handling crane to which you refer. I was looking at an assembled model of one at a model shop in Paris last week- the size is such that, with perhaps a slight building up of the legs, it could well pass in OO gauge. Kibri also do some nice models of container-handling forklifts, both of the types used to move empty and full boxes. These are certainly large enough to pass muster. Brian

The Op was asking about *container* cranes - as in Freightliner trains - not jib cranes.
