Mimicking nature has always been a good starting point for engineers.
The trouble is attempting to convert it into 'simple' mathematic terms may not be the answer. The mould in question is not acting with intelligence but instinct.
The shortest distance between two points is ? ..... but is it cost effective ?
Each cell in the mold is reacting to it immediate environment, is all. The mathematical model of this behaviour is simple: a few rules are enough to produce complex behaviours of the aggregate. See "cellular automatons."
