Now, I used, occasionally, to team up with dedicated 'bashers' in odd places. They had an odd diet: thermos flasks of nescafe, cheese&branston sarnies, and either a crunchy or a curly-wurly. I think the time it took to munch through a curly-wurly helped to relieve the tedium.
