Question for the L&Y boys....

Am finishing off a Hughes Baltic tank kit and was researching the livery. Theres an article in an old Backtrack which states three were given full crimson livery but the rest were a drab grey, whereas Essery and Jenkinson agree abouth the red ones but say the others were unlined black (one was lined later though). So any ideas which is correct. Also says the black ones were numbered but had no company letters. Anyone know the size, colour and shade of the numbers when first built (and was it 1924 ish) ?

Thanks, Simon

Can't answer everything but ...

ooo ooo ooo ... who's (spot the pun?) and is it any good?

Grey was only used for engines in use for a brief transitional period for a limited number of engines when the L&Y and L&NW joined forces pre- grouping. As teh first Baltic didn't hit the rails until 1924 none of them would never have been finished in grey. (It's possible that some of the 4-6-0s they were built from carried the "transitional" livery though.

I'd go with Essery and Jenkinson.

Sorry

And yes it was, all conversion/rebuilds :-)

Millholme. Very nice body, tis a monster and recon white metal the best medium for it. Chassis seems good, not got a lot of experience on valve gear and it was nearly complete when I got it, but seems there was lot of measuring and cutting to make it. Most valve bits fine - some too fine perhaps. Overall tis something different - looks as solid as a brick shithouse :-)

Recon I will, with gunmetal weathring it will look grey anyway.

Tis ok, found it, plain yellow 18".

Thanks, Simon
