Brass brazing filler metal question.

Hi all. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.



I am an experienced welder (gas and electric) with fairly moderate brazing experience. I have, however, never brazed brass to brass which is what I need to do now.



I need to custom make some faucet stems that are made of brass, essentially



3/8" rod brazed in line. I don't know what the exact alloy is. Just good 'ol plumbing brass.

I'm not sure what the best filler metal is. Strength is fairly important but I will probably join the pieces mechanically prior to brazing (threaded brass rod between the two pieces of rod). I don't want to risk melting the pieces as they are one of a kind.



Any help is greatly appreciated.

Copper/Silver alloy, 80/20 or something like that.

Silver "solder". It's not really solder, it's a brazing alloy that gives tremendous strength in close fit up joints and melts safely below the melting point of brass.

The "silver solder" I have and have used looks much closer to brass than silver.

One thing to consider is that the brass parts will be annealed by the brazing temperatures. In other words, the brass parts will be as soft as brass can get once you are done with the brazing. Will that be a problem?
