Could someone please advise me if it is possible to use Flux covered wire in a gas welder - with the gas turned off and a larger tip fitted.

Yes But Use lots of anti splatter spray around the nozzle. Also you may need to slacken your roller tension,if the wire comes out flat ;o)

In many cases you have to reverse polarity in the Mig gun connection as well.
