Huntsman 951 P Helmet band

I can't get this thing to work for anything. I know it is supposed to slip before it strips when you tighten it down, but it seems that I can hardly get it to fit snug enough on my head.

I have a large head. Either a big brain or a thick skull. Tests were inconclusive. I put the crown in the last hole so it should sit on TOP of my head. Yet, it really doesn't, and I can't get the ratchet to work properly. This one is a recently replaced one because I thought the other one was stripped. Then people told me that the new ones ratcheted out once they were tight enough to prevent overtightening. This still seems not to work like it should. I was led to the 951 because the Jackson hood was impossible to keep up with the weight of the NexGen. I may be going back to the Jackson for just headband comfort.

Anyone else have this problem?

I have two of the Huntsman 951's and really like them. I also have a large head, all of my baseball hats are in the last or next to last notch. One thing I have noticed is that the plastic headgear on the Huntsmans break down in a few years of use. I am probably on my fourth or fifth set in 15 years. The headgear stuff can be replaced pretty cheaply. I don't remember having trouble getting the strap to tighten up on my head though, usually it is the ratchet that holds the helmet in the up position that fails for me.

Good Luck,

I find Huntsman 951P headgear lasts about 1 year per set. I change mine out regularly.

Make sure to push the ratchet knob in to engage the gear.
