PO'd with BOC

Jun 20, 2005 5 Replies

After buying a 50cfm bottle from BOC with C-25, I returned it today to get a refill. Now they tell met that they had made a mistake and do not refill customer owned bottles with C-25. They only refill with Argoshield light. They only rent bottles with C-25. They take you to the cleaners with rental stuff.

Their web site shows that this stuff is primarily used for sheetmetal. The guys at the store tried to tell me you can use it for everything. I'm using it to MIG weld 0.25 mild steel. Anyone have an opinion on this.

In Canada the whole gas industry was taken on the carpet a few years ago for this sort of crap. But the weasels talked their way out of this.

In general, I find these BOC people not very friendly towards home hobbyests. But there is not a lot of choice in this town.

Filling tanks isn't HARD. Mixing is just about partial pressures; hook up, open valves, watch guages, stop, swap, repeat for other gas(s) til done. DO get the sequence right when working with reactive gases. Dive shops do it all the time with O2 and air, helium O2 and air, etc. for BREATHING GASES !

Ask 'em very nicely if they'll refill your bottle with Argoshield Heavy, it's close enough to C-25.

Incidentally, you're lucky. The only way I can get owner bottles here in the UK is to use ex-brewery CO2 bottles. I've just given back my 80cf equivalent Argoshield Light bottle as the rental has risen to £45 per year== US$81 per year. This is a lot more than I pay for the bloody gas! I have decided to put up with straight CO2 at £10 for 50cf including the price of the bottle. I can live with a bit of spatter for that price difference.

thanks Marc But I've already asked nicely for the heavy I've found the second source in the city for the C- 25 but I'll have to buy a second bottle

Seems you guys in Europe take a beating for everything=20 Steve L
