I have an 8 year old grandson that has taken a sudden interest in flying. I'm looking for the best value as a starter plane for hime. I'll be there to help him til he solo's but then he'll, for the most part, be on his own. I guess what I'm looking for is something rugged, reasonably safe, and reliable (with spare parts available) that can be flown at the park. Any ideas?

for my nephew for Christmas. Got to fly it once on Christmas day and it flew great. Ran into a pole on landing but no damage. The nice part of this airplane over some others is that is fully proportional on both channels. Also return the registration and get a free replacement wing. Not bad for $50.

Thanks for the info. I like the GWS Slow Stick but I didn't want to invest that much money in a radio and battery in case he fails to take care of it or looses it. The outlaw might be a better choice in this case.
That impressed me. Having built devices from scratch, and I don't mean from kits, I think it is a cheap but well designed/manufactured device. One trade-off compared to others in its class is probably that it doesn't look like a human powered airplane.
You might even find that replacement parts are available at local hobby shops.
The Firebird Scout, at $5 more, also looks good. It seems to be sold out at a lot of places so a lot of people must like it. Thanks again for your imput.

The Cox EZ-Flyer is another possibility. EBay item number 5947613008 for $47 USD, shipped from Ohio UPS ground. I bought one of those too, but for $66.45 total. Everywhere else I've seen, including Wal-Mart, sells it for more.
