I would have PREFERRED to fly legally. I just couldn't AFFORD to. I was only 16 at the time.
No, it was just a pulsed tone transmitter..I was building a proportional servo when I left for college and gave up the hobby for thirty years. Never got around to building digital stuff, or galloping ghost.
That was caused by the old TV sets having a 27 MHz I.F.

Up to 25 watts is LEGAL for R/C on 27.255 MHz, 5 watts on the other 27 MHz frequencies.

I was on 26.95, and 1.5W was the max in those days in the UK, or possibly 0.5W. I forget.
WRONG! You can freely change receiver crystals. It's transmitter crystals you are not supposed to change. Read the rules again.
I think Paul was refering to the fact that Steve was using a wide band transmitter which brodcasts over three present frequencies, not to mention the voice pager and industrial R/C frequencies it may be interfering with.
