Any layer tool/lisp/command that works like old LAI command (need to isolate layers & xref layers)

Express Tools has a Layer Isolate command: LAYISO > Select objects

Doesn't seem to work with xref layers?? Is there a setting to change? thanks for your help
Hmmm, hadn't played with that before since I have never had occasion to isolate an xref layer before. It seems objects in the xref that are on layer
0 behave properly and will display when the xref layer is isolated, the others are turned off per their own layer in the referenced drawing.Beyond my knowledge.. anyone else?
