discovery channel show or divorce?

I have a problem, I feel the need to make stuff I dont need! Sure, the 4' housefly on the minibarn was amusing. The chopper minibike was cool (even though i'm the only one who will ride it up and down the street) so what's next... ANOTHER minibike chopper! These things cost me about $400 to build and they really have no purpose but to amuse me. (i dont want to sell them, just play with them) So needless to say, my wife thinks I'm off my rocker and nobody from the discovery channel has called to put me on a weekly series so we'll see what happens. How about some of the useless projects all of you have made because "you had to do it" (just so i know i'm not alone.)

Oh dear god..the Dark Side has really taken him over...

This is exactly that my old shop teacher Yoda Polansky warned everyone about.......

(beautiful! work and very very well done!)

Now make one up with a steam engine or a hydrogen peroxide engine or add a nitrous oxide bottle to one for the ultimate "ooooooowww!" factor

Actually, I have a honda 360 2 cylinder 4 stroke engine i just got running and am having evil thoughts of making something small and scarry fast... the voices, make 'em stop!!! Once you ride something fast, you need to make everything else faster. I had a ski-doo that flew so come spring time, my harley seemed slow. Ross racing pistons, andrews cam, carb work... now that flies! It really is a sickness!!

Heh. The bug bites us all. There was a great article in the Times this morning about a guy living on a tugboat that he resurrected (by pulling it out of the mud where it sank) and is currently living on, in the Hudson Maritime Museum in Kingston, NY.

Hmm. A tugboat. Wonder how they do that. Time to take a field trip! Hope he doesn't know where there are any more of those things....

It being a dull day, I decide to respond to what "wallster" foisted Fri, 20 Aug 2004 12:54:37 -0400 on rec.crafts.metalworking , viz:

Then there are self applied constraints. I've a friend who wanted to make his car go fast. Any trick in the book, nitrous, turbo charge, ram air, he was considering it. For a Geo Spectrum.

We all gotta have a hobby.

The trick I learned was make stuff for her, Tig up some candle holders, decorative iron for the back yard... That and a dozen roses usually got me out of hot water for a big spending spree and there is nothing like a gift you make.... You have fun, they get all emotional and you get laid like you were 16 again!!! Works like a charm!

Cooool Looookin' Chopper there dude. I have been customizing Mbikes for around 22 yrs now. I have done hardtailing and lowering of the frames. I have goose necked a few and also built complete frames with forward controls and handle bars, oil buckets, seats and either springer or Girder front ends. My newest creation is not done and all I have to do is build the engine which is a '77 Honda 750cc Supersport. It has a 4 over springer with forward controls and oil bucket. The seat and fenders were also my creation. The tank is my own style of coffin tank that holds 4.2 gallons canadian. As soon as it is painted I shall put it on here for you guys to see. People love my work so much that I opened my own business and called it THOMAS' Wrought Iron Works and to most of the bikers up here I am called Pigpens Cycle Works. I am in Saskatoon, Sk, Canada.

very cool! i love bikes, i've been rebuilding and customizing them for years as well. I started with an old HD sportster and have had tons of bikes in and out of my garage. From Honda's to a Triumph i've owned, restored a bunch of them. I currently ride a '91 harley fxr that has been "personalized" from front to the rear. I also make small choppers (about a foot long) out of scrap steel. Samples:

Yikes! That would be the ultimate "OW!" factor if you were sitting astride a nitrous bomb when it went off. It'd take your little leg if not all 3.

Nah, steam burns or nitrous-borne shrapnel don't sound like too much fun to me, and I'm a born risk-taker.

Jeeeze, Larry! Gimme a break. Where'd we be today if James Watt worried about a little steam burn?

He wasn't _squattin'_ on a boiler now, was he Bob? ;)

I might risk one of my long legs, but not the little guy. Uh, uh. No way.

Naw, old James didn't have time to squat on a boiler! After sobering up the next day following the celebration, he spent the rest of his life trying to make the damn thing more efficient.

Reminds me of the electric/peddle powered "Bigger Wheel" I made some years back. I remembered the plastic one I had when I was a wee kid and constructed a metal one complete with a 2HP dc motor. It only did about 15mph on the level, but you should have seen the look of envy from the neighborhood kids when I blew past their Big Wheels. :-)
