Actually the centres of those things look just like the gearing on the US Army's square-wheeled trucks in pop Mech years ago.

That's just because you don't put them up on Ebay, where people will by ANYTHING if you word it right. And I bet if you advertized it as "Spaciality round pegs made of xxx. Specially designed for use in square holes, such as those made by zzz. " and spread it around, you would get some bidders.
