OT: ever have trouble with agent posting?

My ISP dropped newsguy today. It shouldn't be a a problem since I have accounts in place for forteinc and supernews. I get headers fine, get "No servers in the access plan carry newsgroup rec.crafts.metalworking".

I think, if you see this, I can post original messages, just not replies.

Thanks,

Wes

I may have it figured out. I had rec.crafts.metalworking and rec.crafts.metalworking[1]

All bets are off if this doesn't post.

Right click on rcm folder and select folder properties. It should be straight forward from there.

Hey Wes, You posted at 12:22 AM and 1:21 AM today (15th). I got both OK on newsguy.

Any particular reason for not getting your own personal account with Newsguy? That's what I am using, as my ISP's news server is pretty much useless to me. :-)

Good Luck, DoN.

The problem is that I have accounts with supernews and forteinc that would not post. My ISP was getting service from newsguy until the ISP dropped it. Since I'm paid up on the other two accounts for the rest of the month, I was trying to use them to post. I'll probably drop one or both and go to newsguy.

Did your newsguy service go out over Christmas/New Years holidays?

O.K. That makes sense.

Yep! They were going to move to newer. faster, and larger servers over the New-years holiday. Planned for a quick changeover, with everyone working like mad over the holiday.

Then (after they had shut down the old servers and yanked them out), they discovered on unpacking that several of the new servers had been dropped hard enough so disk drives were yanked free of the brackets, let alone other damage inside the servers.

So -- they were slowed down by waiting for new machines to replace the damaged ones. (I wonder whose insurance paid for that?)

Add to that the usual problems with porting complex software to new systems (I don't know whether there was a change of hardware maker in the process), and there were some problems which took most of a week to finally fix.

But -- once the last of them was fixed, one fairly minor problem which I had been observing in my feed was finally fixed. The new system made it bad enough so there were reports from a lot more than just me. I tend to rather exercise the server with all of my killfile processing and scoring, so I see problems that others did not until the new setup.

And -- they did not even *think* of charging for those days before things were working again. They were sending out regular e-mails to keep the individual subscribers on top of what was going on.

The e-mail servers had been upgraded before they dived into the news servers and hit the snags.

And -- you can get a good idea of what is going on by reading newsguy.general -- one of their local newsgroups. In the times when things are working fine, they are filled with chatter between the various people who work there and various other individuals.

Enjoy, DoN.

That's a good lesson to everyone. Open ALL new stuff FIRST and verify operation before yanking out the old, working model of whatever you're running.

Q: Why Newsguy vs. GigaNews, TeraNews, or others?

I'm sure that they have learned *that* lesson.

Good reports of it before I switched. And I needed a news server quickly, and could not ask on newsgroups about it until I got one. :-)

Enjoy, DoN.
