My initial impression was that the case was for holding jars. Jars are cylindrical, so I guess my first impression was wrong.

Are the objects held by the case roughly spherical? The dividers inside of the case appear to be cloth with metal edges. Is this right? Does the rectangular hole in the lid serve a purpose that is related to the objects held by the case (e.g., it allows air to flow around the objects)? Is the hole covered by a screen (I can't tell from the photo)?

Is the case used to dry or smoke something (e.g., drying apricots)?

Or, is there a gap between the compartments and the top, or does the top (quite) seal the compartments when closed?

The box didn't age very well so I didn't include this photo on my site, at the link is a picture of the top of the box when in the closed position:

The lid is very close to the top of the compartments when closed, and the objects would not project over the top edge.

There isn't a screen over the hole, not sure if air flow is really necessary for the contents, possibly it's just for quick reference to see if the box is empty or not.
