Emco Compact 5 PC Lathe

Hi All, first posting here and it starts with a question.



I have just been offered an Emco Compact 5 PC Lathe free of charge as it is cluttering a friends garage up, the bad news is it is blowing fuses. My need is for a small simple lathe for one offs for motorcycles and my engineering skills are not high so accordingly something rudementery will suffice.



Anyway, my question is are such machines worth getting repaired, or alternatively is it feasible to convert such a tool to manual use, ie throw the CNC away, stick a small motor and manual toolpost on etc.



Alternatively do I just give up on the ideas and keep looking for a purpose built lathe.

I just had a quick look at

which has a few details on it. Clever little thing, but appears to have no compound slide.

and fit a handwheel on the cross slide, but leadcrew feed would have to be via another handwheel fitted at the end of the bed. Of course, that supposes that you can fix the fuse problem and then sort out a way of taking the signals from the disconnected steppers out of the loop. Me, I'm electronically dyslexic, so I wouldn't be able to do that. However, I'd still take it as a freebie if it was me, as its probably quite usuable. This page:

shows a standard compact 5 with handwheels and so on, so there must be spares for it, and also lists a price of =A3599.

As its free why dont you take it as it is a cheap and interesting introduction, and if you decide you dont want it after a while I'm sure someone here would be happy to drive over and take it off your hands.

Take the stepper motors off and make up handles and you have a useful small lathe. There's no compound slide but I've found mine useful for small parts with its high speed. The chuck's a pain - tightening with tommy bars and the software was over complex and difficult. It's worth having though!
