Linisher & Belts

Hi all,

I've won a linishing machine on the dread eBay. Belt size (according to the seller) is 36x4, which I work out to be 100x915 in milli-things. Auction is here:

Cromwell wants approx =A340 for 10 belts, of a fixed grade. Thing is, I don't want 10 belts and am never likely to use 10 belts unless I am astonishingly careless.

Do any of you clever peeps know where I can get one or two belts? Are Cromwell likely to want to sell me just one belt and should I just ask them?

Also, can y'all recommend what size of motor I should be on the look-out for to drive this thing? I have an ginourmous old-fashion 1hp 1ph GEC type motor in the garage that looks like it will bring blackouts to the streets if I plug it in. Or does anyone have something loafing around they would like to unload in exchange for pictures of the Queen?

I would *guess* 1/2hp would be enough.

So Milton Keynes is going to tremble! Is that why you bought a book on mending pottery? Seriously, a 1/4HP motor from a washing machine was what worked on my ancient Picador, now sold.

My mate was swanning about with one this AM and he buys his own abrasive rolls and makes up his own belts.

I would try one of the specialist sellers of abrasive wheels who will make up a series of graded belts which I think that you will obviously need.

I would suggest you measure it before parting with cash for belts, though it looks as though you have quite a lattitude on the adjustments.

Axminster do belts, as do Screwfix

thanks all. I've picked the thing up now.

I did find a .33hp Brooks motor at the bottom of the garage, but it looks like someone has let the smoke out of it - nasty black stuff left inside & some crunchy insulation. Is it worth getting these things re-wound? I was just planning to put an ad on homeworkshop for a motor.

Counting up in the garage, two drill presses, two lathes, mechanical hacksaw thing, bench grinder & compressor all have seperate 'lectric motors. Some days you just think 'line shafts. a good idea or what?'.

Norman, I thought a book on mending potttery might be handy, in case any other vistor to the Bodleian takes a dislike to Ming - I can just leap in, book in hand & save the day! But seriously, making your own abrasive belts and things? like, gluing sand on & stiching belts together?

Oh, no! I cannot imagine you sitting crosslegged stitching abrasive belts together. As for glueing sand(?) on, well! So let's start again! Initially, I would rob the skip of a 1/4HP motor from a redundant washing machine. You'll note that I too have a spares dept. A one to one pulley and a belt- if the owner of the skip notices- and your whatsit and a base board. This is precisely what I did for this old picador thingy.

Armed with a piece of string for the belt length, I tripped off to the local abrasserie in my specially kept oiled overalls- normally kept for my Tax inspector interview- and leaned- all coy like as if I had done it for years. Within a week, I had a neat set of abrasive belts- and parted with the coins of the realm proportionate to those who wear greasy overalls. QED as they say.

Despite the foregoing, I am still rather baffled at this mending of pottery thing- Ming. I can only suppose that you entertain Greek waiters to urn money in your spare time.

My kindest thoughts and hope that you will have a new capacitor- capacity thing in the near future.

Hi Norm,

I shall leave the gluing of sand to your expert friend then. I believe there was a washing machine abandoned at the end of the road - may have to walk casually past it hiding my bolt croppers under me hat.

As to the Ming thing - I was referencing the wrong museum. It was the Fitzwilliam Museum - see

Firm is J A Crew Engineering Supplies.. I have no personal experience of the firm but it seemes to have existed for many years.

Sadly, my search for milking stools ( Well you have to qualify the noun), has failed.

Nil Illigitimi carborundum- as the Greeks say. Or a stitch in line?

Quite reliable and have been around since the 1960's and 70's. We have dealt with them a number of times, very useful for nylon bar offcuts.
