ML7 OIL NIPS

Hi ya, I bought some new ball type oil nipples from Myfords while at their open week, which Ipromptly installed in place of the originals. Obviously, I can't use an ordinary oil can on these nipples, so what is so special about the tip on the 'correct' oil can that can allow them to be used on these nipples? Can I modify my own oil can/s ? .... or do I need one of those high pressure grease-gun type thing?? Any help would be greatly appreciated by a Myford newbee. Cheerso Brad.

They have a nozzle which has a concave hemispherical end, designed to give a good fit on the rim of the nipple and allow the pressure generated in the can to force down the nipple ball. Of course, in reality, if you don't hold it *just* right, or one or other is not in perfect condition, the seal leaves something to be desired and you can get some leakage.

Pity you didn't get a can while you were there - Myford have recently started stocking some new tubular pump cans which are worlds better than the one which came with my S7 - which leaked oil from the base and the telescopic section whatever I did.

Hi ya Many thanks for that, would you happen to know what those "tubular pump cans" are actually called? I'm in reasonable reach of Myfords factory, so I could pick one up if I know what I'm asking for. Cheers Brad.

Ah, thanks for that, that's really helpful. Now to start saving the pennies. A tad expensive for an oil can, but that's Myford's for you. Cheers to all who replied to this thread. Brad.

Alternatively, look at Ebay item number 140171815778. That'll probably do the job for a tad less. If the end doesn't fit, turn up a new one with an internal groove to seat an O ring for sealing, or a bit of tapered polythene or PTFE etc.

For the time being, if you haven't got anything that will force some oil past the nipples, just unscrew them and drip some oil in the holes with an oil can. Worked for me for a year :-)

Can I assume that by 'modifying' the tip of an ordinary oil can, that I would not generate sufficient pressure to force oil into the nipples? Would that be the reason why I would need an oil 'pump' type dispenser? If so, I think I might just splash out on one of the Myford ones. Brad.

There's a much simpler solution. Just put a bit of fine cloth, eg an old handkerchief, over the nozzle of the Myford gun before applying to the nipple, that will stop 90 per cent of the oil loss.

Don't put the handkerchief back in your pocket...
