Tig amp range question

Nov 04, 2003 3 Replies

If a tig is stated as having a range of 20-200 amps will it butt-weld steel thinner than 20 guage..thats about 0.7mm....without blowing thru etc. This is a conventional ac-dc transformer tig with no slopes or square wave or pulse. This is a wilkinson tig i have my eyes on model ..same as the cebora special uno 200 amps and ac-dc. condition "like new" price £250 but has old fashioned ferrite core in and out doofor for control of power. all the best..mark

Good question....

Mild Steel or Stainless steel???...... it makes a diferance, as one needs more amps than the other

I Tig weld surgical instruments, but am unable to answer your question without first looking at the settings i use for similar welds, i have been using the welder for so long i just take the amps for granted without looking. half the time i just move the dial without looking as feel is far better than any amp settings that may appear on the machine.

I will look at work tomorrow and report back to you, but i think you should be ok for a closed butt weld, i will let you know my findings.

The old tig welders are the best, i use a very old Rowan Arc (BOC) welder at work and it has outlasted 3 "new" ones purchased by a company next door to me in the past 10 years, this is a case IMO of technology being a bad influence on what was a good design to start with, nearly all the modern welders i know of have problems with over heating or circuit boards either blowing up or blowing chips if they are used for any period of time (more than 2 hours)

very good advice Tim...its built my confidence up,before I hand over my dosh tommorow.......just worried that, because of its minimum aperage of 20 amps maybe,it will not be able to do "SOME OF" the jobs I want it to do. all the best...mark

20 amps should be fine, I use somewhere close to that for similar in stainless, if you have problems weld the parts on a chillier plate (aluminium works well) with a groove milled in it for the root of the weld, it sounds as though you are only going to be welding small amounts of the smaller stuff, so if I were you, I would go for it.

hope my reply is not too late
