Turning for beginners

For those of you reading this in the northern hemisphere, you just have remember to run the spindle in reverse as the book was written for Australian lathes

Not, if you follow page three and bolt the lathe to the side of the work-bench in the vertical position. Seems to work, anyway.

The book says the lathe is a Hercus, but mine is a South Bend, and it is exactly the same lathe :-)

Thanks for the posting :-) There are loads of information in the book.

Hercus and Boxford both made licensed copies of the South Bend 9 inch lathe. The Boxford evolved a bit past the South Bend and became what the South Bend could have been, had there been any motivation to upgrade the head at all.

Little wonder that the books look the same.

Since I've never had the opportunity to compare a SB with a Hercus, I've got to ask, what is the difference in the heads?
