I hate Wildfire club

Call me cynical but one month after my switch to Wildfire I'm still trying to figure out why I bothered and whether the whole point was to keep the re-training companies in business.

Maybe six months down the road I'll be a real Wildfire advocate but right now I've never seen such a poorly thought out software update. At least with the old menu system there was a logical sequence to most things and it guided you through the selection process, now I'm forever trying to remember whether I have to pre-select or post-select and whether it's the control key or the shift key.

Why have they moved everything and where is there logic behind their new location. Take this example; to mirror a surface you click on the surface and the mirror tool highlights but to mirror a feature you have to use 'edit-feature operations-copy-mirror' tool like the old

2001 menu's. To mirror the whole geometry you have to remember to click on the part name in the model tree before the mirror tool highlights - even the menu-mapper and the help files don't tell you to highlight the part name so it took me 20 mins to suss out.

Perhaps the only thing I really like is the ablity to change a feature from solid to surface or a protrusion to a cut but maybe I'll discover more positives as time goes by...

Try moving engineers with 3-15 years on Unigraphics to Wildfire. And then have management tell them that they have to use 2001 on their new project.

I still think this whole 'just like windows' interface was though up by marketing, not user requests. I haven't swithced to WF yet, but the only use I understand for the new Wildfire release over 2001 is protrude or cut with draft.

How about automatic husk heal> Call me cynical but one month after my switch to Wildfire I'm still

I'm in the " i've had enough fun every time they've done major changes so i'm not going to update until wildfire2 at least"

i still reember when thay introduced proe 17 to our company. we were in the middle of two major projects, after a week of crashing and parts continually failing, we took it off, and went back to 16. , losing a weeksworth of time and effort. i think we only put on 19. I also learnt to have new projects only on the new versions.

cheers Craig

What I've heard about wildfire is that they are not done yet with all the repositionning of all commands, that's why some are still at their old position and that when you open ProE, you don't have a full screen. I think they are triing to follow Catia (wildfire is in the same mood of Catia V5). Catia made a major change when they released V5 replacing V4 and it was the same thing for me as you just said with ProE (*?&&$/1$!? with the position of the commands) but I am sure you will prefer wildfire in a couple of weeks like I did with Catia V5. Hold on!

Hang tight; Wildfire 2.0 Pre-Production is going to be released and available for download on 17 November. It should complete the disintegration of the Menu Manager, and hopefully bring more coherence to the UI.

Yeah, but will this paradigm continue through all of the other modules of Pro/E? I haven't touched sheetmetal in a couple years, but last I checked that was still using the v18 assembly interface for defining a die!

The questions users have (consistency, when will it be over) are not answered by claims for WF2. First, I can not confirm the rumor on PTC's website. You'd think, if there were anything to this 11/7 date, there'd be a news release. NADA

But two things seem to bother everybody still. Will it be consistent and when will it be over!?! What has gone before is not reassuring on either count. People have already pointed out their concerns on consistency (within 'Dashboard', operations aren't consistent, some operations are still not 'Dashboard' and whole modules have been ignored. But, there is also the question of when this will be completed. I love optimistic predictions, and, certainly, Wildfire 2, as a culmination of ongoing changes, is an optimistic prediction. Considering how far Pro/e has to go to finish a consistent, comprehensive interface change and considering how long it has milked it so far and considering it's shakey financial position, can it afford to stop milking it? But, considering the desertion rate, can it afford to prolong it?

Because I am going to PTC in Needham to test drive it for a week, coinciding with when the Preproduction version goes online........and I'm going on November 17.

Ah, excellent, a first hand observation and hopefully a report on the future of Pro/e. Sounds exciting! Have you participated in any of the PTC/USER technical committees?

Good luck, David Janes

Maybe they could make the icon for sketching a hole the same as the icon for sketching everything else look the same in the new release also :-) I mean why have are they different in the first place?

I'm going to say this as nice as I can, Wildfire sucks sucks sucks!!!!! PTC don't care about its present and loyal users. It's all about market share to PTC. Marketing wants to attract new customers. They don't care what we want or need, just try and steal a new customer away from a smaller competitor. It will take me many months to get back to pre-Wildfire comfortable stage and my standard productive. Will PTC reimburse us for our lost time and lost profits? I think not! Hey I got to run, my new web browser said it's time send another truckload of maintenance money now!

I agree. Been on Pro since rev 7. I feel like I'm starting over. How much money in lost time do you think this mess of a revision going to cost. And anyone that thinks some BS Wildfire tutorial or Coach is going to make up for it, is just fooling themselves.

I have just finished going to a pro-e users group meeting, and one of the benefits was a 'hands-on' session with WF. The clicking, ctrl-clicking, shift-clicking, etc... is going to drive me crazy.

So, I get a tryout edition that has a 60 day limitation. Great. I load the version, get the licence from PTC, all is well.

Now, PTC has enabled 'Pro-Student' in this version. In a nutshell, not only can I NOT open any of my existing parts, assemblies, drawings, formats, etc., but I can't even use any of the demo files supplied by PTC in the C:\Program Files\ProENGINEER WildfireTryout\demos\demo\mdx\tutorial directories. Great move PTC!

Has anyone gotten around this in the demo version? I haven't called PTC yet, as the e-mail I rec'd with the licence codes says that there is no tech support available with this version!

Otherwise, I think that WF is not so bad. Realize that I have come to Pro-E from v19, and have only been using it for 5 yrs and have NO mapkeys. I was formerly a SW user. I would go back to SW if possible, but not.

PS: Why does WF make you Spin in 3D using the center mouse button, but PAN in 2D uses the center mouse button! Pan in 3D is Shift + Center Mouse button.

Unbelieveable

Now I know why the user group meet> I'm going to say this as nice as I can, Wildfire sucks sucks sucks!!!!! PTC

I don't get the mouse thing either. It's ass backward from the old way to drive. Ctrl key and the three mouse buttons worked just fine.

Wildfire 2.0 Pre-production is now available for download on PTC's website. It seems they've beaten their Nov 17th release date.

Bonus: It's down to just two CDs for Windows.
