Eurofighter Typhoon Colours

Hi folks,

I have recently got back into jet modelling after a long spell covering World War Two subjects and was wondering if you could help me with that age old chestnut colours! I have recently purchased the Revell 1/72 Eurofighter Typhoon 2-seater, a nice little kit, which I have enjoyed building, but now have a problem with when it comes to colours. I am aware that Revell have their own odd ideas about colours so ignoring that I decide to trawl the net and my model magazine collection for help on this matter and made my dilema worse? According to most sources the aircraft is painted in what used to be called Barley Grey, now I understand it is called Camouflage grey. I have several compaines versions of this colour, Humbrol, xtarcolor and Mr Color, but all seem to be very dark. I have tried lightening it with both white and light grey with no real success. Can anyone help me with this please.

Thanks in advance.

Doug.

I recently had the opportunity to compare the Xtracrylix paint against the real thing. The Xtracrylix paint is slightly lighter than the actual paint, which I feel provides a reasonable "scale colour" effect.

Good question. The Dec 2006 issue of Scale Aircraft Modelling gives F.S. 36320, Compass Grey, for Luftwaffe Eurofighters. Sources suggest all Eurofighters are the same but I swear the Luftwaffe's are just a little bluer. But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

I started to paint one a few weeks ago, and thought it looked too dark.

Realised I was using Dark camoflage grey - haven't made the same mistake have you?

Hi everyone, thanks for your input. Can you tell me then if Humbrol #167 RAF Barley Grey is light or dark camouflage grey. I am aware that photographs are not always helpful but I have found some really good ones on Airliners.net and I must admit that all Typhoon's seem to be the same shade of grey and I hate to say it but camouflage grey still looks to dark! I have found some Italeri plans which states that the overall colour for the Eurofighter is Gull grey, and that is listed as either Humbrol #40 or #140, any thoughts on this as the base colour?

Again using only photo's seen on the web it looks as though all the typhoons are the same basic shade of grey no mater which airforce they are flying with.

Camouflage grey is, I think, Light Compass Ghost Grey, FS36375. The Italeri information seems a bit iffy to me, Light Gull Grey would be too light, and Dark Gull Grey would be too dark, at least to my eyes.

Why Revell persist with their anarchic painting instructions is beyond me, though I suspect commercial considerations are a factor.

The erstwhile Barley Grey is now called Light Camouflage Grey.

Gull Grey is absolutely, positively the wrong colour!

I can't say for sure, but it is my opinion that RAF and Luftwaffe Typhoons would be different colours. Each service already has a supply infrastructure which can supply their specific paints. The Light Camouflage Grey was previously used on RAF Tornados, while Luftwaffe F-4Fs used various FS standard greys. And given the financial straits that the RAF is currently in, I think it very unlikely that they would consider sourcing a new paint colour. However, I stress that my statements in this paragraph are

*opinion* and should not be considered as fact.

Wouldn't the Luftwaffe F-4's use RAL numbered paints rather than the FS system?.(I don't know for sure just seems to be more likely)

Okay, after some exhaustive searching I have discovered the following:

Luftwaffe Typhoons RAL7000 (FS35237) Blue/Grey = 145 RAF Typhoons BS262 (FS36314) Camouflage Grey = 167

Some reports have luftwaffe typhoons as RAL7001 (FS36375) Medium Grey

- Humbrol 64 or 127, but think this is to light.

The norm 90' schemes use FS, not RAL colours. Dunno why.
