I think Tom was trying to point out that some of the problems we have today aren't new. They're the same old baggage we've carried with us through history.

I've heard of Ford's book but this is the first time I've seen a quote. No wonder Jews didn't buy Ford products for so long. Henry Ford may have had a spark of genius and talent but there are so many dark corners to his soul.

Loved that one myself. An adventure story written with wit and humour!

He was a product of his times, and as products of his times go, he was a fairly mild one. After all, Herr Schikelgruber wasn't a great deal younger.

Thankfully, those dark times are far behind.

Like demagogues--like Bill O'Reilly trying to smokescreen his little vibrator problems with a sudden embrace of the role of God's Only Man defending Christmas. Winnow it all out and you've got three concrete examples of "repression"--two of which happened a long time ago. The rest are anecdotal, and based on the writer's paranoid subjective view of how people receive his "Merry Christmas". Know why the Puritans banned Christmas in Massachusetts? They knew their Bible well enough to know that shepards don't tend the flocks at night until lambing, in March. They knew Christmas was a Christian takeover of Saturnalia--which was celebrated Dec. 25--and wanted none of it. Every Christmas I can see their point better and better.

Yep, "Moon" is. "Glory Road" shouldn't be followed quite as closely however. :)

I think that amounts to six of one or half a dozen of the other.

Someone wrote (sorry; I didn't save the header and some snipped)

Did they also know that the actual event celebrated on December 25 is actually believed to have taken place on a different date, probably in the spring of the year?

Sigh! Why is it that so many of our holiday must be completely disected and hyper-analyzed for absolute historical accuracy; Hint, Christmas in NOT a model aircraft or tank. Why can't we just take some things on faith and enjoy our holiday for what it represents according to our culture and tradition. If you (you meaning the generic "anyone who doesn't believe in Christmas") don't want to celebrate Christmas......don't; no one's forcing you. At the same time. don't rain on my parade of those who do believe in the magic of the holiday.

Bill (and everyone else),

Thought you might like to see this. I live in an area of Philadelphia that has a large Jewish population as well as a large Christian population made up of many denominations, as well as lots of other kinds of people. This was the editorial in last week's "neighborhood" newspaper (which you'd NEVER see in either of the major dailies). I've standardized some of the punctuation characters but the text is unchanged:

EDITORIAL for December 23, 2004

Have a great day!

For many people, Christmas is a time for prayer, fellowship, spiritual awareness and renewal; it?s also a time for lavish presents, and there?s nothing wrong with that -- provided celebrants appreciate the meaning of this most joyous occasion.

All of mankind -- Jews, gentiles, Muslims, atheists, agnostics, believers and non-believers alike -- would be wise to adopt a wholesome perspective of Dec. 25.

Showing respect for a religion that by its very nature is pure and good and decent is always the right way to go.

On Christmas Day, non-Christians need not fret about not worshiping Jesus. It?s perfectly OK to be a detached observer. In this secular society, just worship life itself and be grateful that America is a land where you are not compelled to be a Christian on Christmas. You don?t have to believe in Christ to conduct yourself in a manner that Jesus would approve of.

This Saturday, and every day thereafter, just be the best human being you can be. Kiss your spouse. Kiss your kids. Kiss your parents. Kiss your grandparents. Kiss your siblings. Make "I love you" the spoken phrase of the day.

Memo for the politically and religiously correct: Attempts to take "Christ" out of Christmas are demeaning, incendiary, offensive and unfair. In this pluralistic society, uttering phrases like Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah or Happy Kwanzaa are perfectly innocent ways to extend holiday greetings to your fellow man.

There is nothing to fear from public displays of menorahs or Christmas trees. President Bush and Congress have not declared, and will never declare, Christianity, Judaism or any other religion to be America?s official religion. Therefore, one man?s "holy day" need not be construed as anything more than another man?s holiday. It is not a threat to your way of life. It?s freedom of religion. It?s the American way.

PCers,non-believers and anyone with a bug up their butt about Christ may want to just skip this...

Jesus Test

This is an easy test, you score 100 or zero. If you aren't ashamed to do this, please follow the directions.

Jesus said, "if you are ashamed of me, I will be ashamed of you before my Father."

Not ashamed Pass this on . .. . only if you mean it.

Yes, I do Love God. He is my source of existence and Savior. He keeps me functioning each and everyday. Without Him, I will be nothing. Without Him, I am nothing but with Him I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me. Phil 4:13

This is the simplest test ... . . If you Love God, and are not ashamed of all the marvelous things he has done for you, please pass this along.
