Tamiya's 1/48 scale armor kits: I think I'm hooked

After hearing about these things a few months ago I decided to give one a go this past week (the early Sherman, to be exact). As much as I love 1/35 scale armor modeling, I have to admit that the hobby has become kind of tedious for me lately because there is so much detail on vehicles, figures, and accessories in that scale. Building a single tank can take months because I have little spare time. But this 1/48 kit practically falls together. I love how simple it is, but at the same time the detail is still impressive (though it's pretty cheesy that the tools are molded to the hull - is it really asking too much for them to be separate pieces?). And the figures and accessories that I also bought are nice too. I should be able to build a nice little diorama that takes up much less space than a 1/35 scale diorama, in about a quarter the time it would have taken in 1/35 scale. I think Tamiya is on to something here, though it would sure be a shame if I never got around to building all the great 1/35 scale kits that have been sitting on my shelves for years :)

Some times I could agree with you, I sometimes feel a little jaded about a long project, usually i put it all away and start something else, a much simpler model .........like a small armoured car, or a figure....something that can give me quicker results..................then I go back to the big project. I havent delved outside 1:35 models except for figures for a long time.

I've always been a 1/48 aircraft modeler and bought whatever armor I could in that scale. Have most of the Bandai stuff, glad to see Tamiya jumping on the wagon. I hope I get to see something that's not been done before. Cheers, The Keeper

I hope they re-release or update their old M60 A1E1 (a.k.a M60 A2?). I never got around to getting one when Tamiya had their original 1/48 line of tanks available.

Just for grins, I seem to remember some of the tanks in the original Tamiya series:

M60 A1 M60 A3 M60 A1E1 S-Tank Su-100?

Anyone remember any others?

Yes Martin, I have several of these 1/48 scale motorized armor kits. There was not an M60A3 or SU-100 in the series. The ones I have are:

T-34/76 SU-85 (do not have but it is listed on the box side) M60 M60A1 M60A1E1 (aka M60A2) Swedish S tank (I have the Academy copy) JGSDF MBT71 (Type 71) Jagdpanzer Kanone (modern Bundeswehr tank destroyer)

These 7 are the ones listed on the Tamiya insert as well. Not great kits, more motorized toys than anything.
