True Colors Shining Through?

I just recently bought the cutaway Millenium Falcon; the instructions suggest that the two outer pieces of the hull be painted light gray, but when I watch Star Wars it always appears to me that the Falcon is some shade of dirty white. Which is the "true" color to paint the hull?

Same sort of thing with the film models of the starship Enterprise - film models are often painted a light blue-gray, or gray and that photographs as white.

Bottom line for sci-fi and fantasy models IMO is to pain them as you like, seeing as they are creative speculations and not "scale" in the formal sense.

Yeah... I did that when the original Cylon fighter models came out; late '70s I think? Anyway, I was young and careless, and I still regret not going for as much accuracy as I could get. Sigh; I miss those days... But as a certain Admiral would say, "we learn by doing." :-)
