Create an assembly and include a layout sketch Insert a new part into the assembly (inplace mate) Add a sketch to the new part While still in part edit mode click on the assembly layout sketch and RMB CTD every time

I just tried what I think you defined and it worked fine. I was on SP4.1, but then updated to 4.2 & tried it again. Worked fine each time. Try posting a detailed step-by-step (click here, etc.) and I'll try it again.

I will post step by step
Here is the sequence of events that lead to a crash
Create a top level assembly sketch. I then used this sketch to drive features (not sure this is necessary to recreate CTD) From the assembly insert new part Select face of existing part Exit new part edit mode Delete the new part inplace mate Edit the new part Click on assembly level sketch and RMB CTD
That should do it!
