Diesel and Freight Together in layout

Your "Window of Opportunity" here Charles, spans from about 1939 to 1957. I don't know ~exactly~ when the Central ran its last steamer but it was some time in the vicinity of '54 - '57. The Lionel diesels you have, I am assuming, are EMD model F-3 diesel locomotives with the lightning stripe livery. More than 1,100 EMD F-3s were produced starting in 1945 and served alongside steam until steam was gone.

Yes, that is what the Locomotive looks like. It came with a passenger set. I am wondering whether though which would be used for passenger service more the diesel or the steam. Since the steam locomotives came with freight sets, but I could switch them around. I was watching the movie North By Northwest when I notied the passenger train they were riding had the very distinct markings and logo of the New York Central. The last few frames show a Southern Railway Passenger train; however; since I already had New York Central Freight the most logical step for me was to get a New York Central Passenger set. The other passenger set I have is a B&O Passenger set made by K-Line. It has a steam locomotive a 4-6-2, I am not sure whether it is what is called a Pacific. I have an album by Gerry Mulligan, Age Of Steam, and on one side of the album it opens with a tune by him K-4 Pacific, but I think it refers to the PRR. The other diesel I have is marked Lehigh Valley, I am not sure what the name of the locomotive is but it looks a bit like a GP. Unfortunately, I live in an apartment and can not run all of my collection due to lack of space.

------------------------------------------------- Lionel's NYC Limited set has an EMD FT locomotive. The real FT predated the F3.

Lionel has an 0 Gauge Transition Piece to connect FasTrack with regular track. It's #6-12040 ($5.99). You can probably use it with your 027 track.
