I am brandon, a lurking 18 year old railroad enthusiast.
I have posted here a few times before, but have not really gotten consistently been a part of the group, therefore I'm introducing myself, starting off with a question about N-scale code 55 track and pricing things.
I am now able to commence construction on my layout. I'm 18, so it's not often I can spend this sort of money on trains. I'm 99% decided upon using code 55, but have only been able to find code 55 flex track for $2.10 per piece, I was hoping to find it at $2 or less, but the cheapest is at
Therefore, here comes the question
how do the flanges on the standard railcars (MT, atlas, kato) handle the rail height with the 55? I have heard there might be some problems with them. I don't really feel like trying to buy new Kato SD-45s or LL SD-7s, SW9s or Atlas SD60s (pretty much my whole fleet of UP), so before I buy it I would like to know.
I'm working with a room about 10 feet x 11 feet. I am going with an around the wall layout (cutting the sides by the door shorter to allow clearance for door to be kept open. through the middle (about 24" of it) I will have a switchyard oging from one wall to the other, with an engine service facility off to the side farthest from the door. I will begin once I can get the enthusiasm of having the track and such in my posession. Then I will slow up on the work on my neighbor friend's house in favor of my own railroad in miniature. I will have pictures that I have taken of the layout at his house up on the net as soon as I can edit them down to the appropriate size (gotta get image editing software first...)
I model the Union Pacific Railroad in the Northwest mid 90's to now, 90% intermodal and about 10% manifests
